brief history of Arnis martial arts

Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali, is the traditional martial art and the national sport of the Philippines. It is one of the oldest martial arts in Southeast Asia, with a history that dates back hundreds of years. Developed by the indigenous people of the Philippine islands, Arnis was originally created as a practical system of self-defense and warfare. Warriors used sticks, swords, knives, spears, and empty-hand techniques to protect their communities and defend their homeland.

The art evolved through centuries of tribal conflicts and cultural exchanges. Different regions of the Philippines developed their own unique styles and techniques, each emphasizing speed, precision, footwork, timing, and effective weapon handling. These regional systems were passed down from one generation to the next, preserving the rich martial heritage of the Filipino people.

During the Spanish colonial period (1565–1898), the carrying and practice of weapons by local Filipinos was heavily restricted. To preserve their martial traditions, practitioners adapted their training into cultural dances, festivals, and choreographed performances, allowing the techniques to survive despite colonial restrictions. This creative adaptation ensured that the knowledge of Arnis continued to be passed on in secret.

As time progressed, Arnis transformed from a battlefield combat system into a structured martial art suitable for both self-defense and competitive sport. While it continues to teach effective weapon-based techniques, modern Arnis also includes empty-hand combat, disarming methods, defensive tactics, and physical conditioning. Today, practitioners begin training with rattan sticks before progressing to knife defense, sword techniques, and unarmed applications.

Recognizing its cultural and historical significance, the Government of the Philippines declared Arnis the National Martial Art and Sport of the Philippines through Republic Act No. 9850 in 2009. The sport was also introduced into schools and universities as part of physical education, helping preserve the country’s martial heritage while encouraging youth participation.

Today, Arnis is practiced in more than 70 countries and continues to grow through international competitions, coaching programs, and cultural exchanges. It is recognized not only for its practical self-defense techniques but also for the values it teaches, including discipline, respect, confidence, self-control, leadership, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

In India, the sport has gained increasing popularity through the efforts of dedicated athletes, coaches, and sports organizations. Arnis Association Haryana is committed to promoting and developing Arnis across the state by organizing championships, coaching camps, referee and judge certification programs, workshops, and grassroots development initiatives. The association aims to provide athletes with opportunities to excel at the district, state, national, and international levels while preserving the spirit and traditions of this remarkable martial art.

Arnis is more than a martial art—it is a living tradition that combines history, culture, discipline, and athletic excellence, inspiring generations to train with honor, compete with integrity, and strive for excellence.

Where every athlete finds their passion.
